Overloading: Why Professional Carriers Refuse It

Overloading may look like a way to reduce the number of trips and cut costs, but in reality it makes everyone pay more: the road, the truck, the driver and the owner of the goods. That is why professional transport companies stick to the permitted weights even if it means an extra trip.

1. It damages roads and bridges

An official at the Egyptian Roads Authority said in earlier statements that vehicles which do not respect legal loads are the main cause of damage to highways and a shorter design life. Parliamentary reports also call for limits on transport accidents linked to violating loads, including trucks hitting pedestrian bridges because of the height of the load.

2. It reduces driving safety

A truck loaded beyond its capacity loses stability and becomes harder to control, needs a longer distance to stop, and crawls on slopes. That is why pre-trip inspection checklists include making sure the truck is not loaded above the permitted limit.

3. It wears out the truck itself

Tyres, brakes and suspension are the components most affected by excess weight, and they are also among the causes of breakdowns on the road. In other words, overloading today means a breakdown or delay tomorrow.

4. It exposes the shipment to delay and violations

The Egyptian Ministry of Transport has previously announced a set of measures to control excess loads, including additional weighing stations on roads and sending the truck back to unload the excess, along with penalties up to withdrawing the driving licence for three months and cancelling it on repeat, under the traffic law. This means a violating load can stop your shipment halfway.

What does the customer gain from respecting the weights?

  • More regular arrival and less exposure to stops at weighing stations and checkpoints.
  • Higher safety for the goods thanks to a more stable truck and fewer breakdowns.
  • A clearer cost that is easier to predict, with no surprise violations.

If your quantity is large, it is safer to split it across more than one truck within the permitted limits instead of loading one truck beyond its capacity.

Note: the measures and penalties mentioned are taken from earlier statements and news, so it is advisable to check the current regulations with the official authorities.
