Transporting Grain and Feed Ingredients: How to Keep Quality Intact from Loading to Delivery

Grain and feed ingredients are sensitive goods. Their quality is not decided only in the field or the warehouse, it is also strongly affected by what happens during transport. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) points out that transport losses mostly come from damaged packaging, torn bags and spillage, from water entering the load which causes mould and mycotoxin contamination, from insect and rodent infestation, from changes in the micro-climate, and from accidental contamination.

1. Start with a clean truck bed

Any old residue in the truck bed can carry insects or mould, or mix one type with another. That is why the bed should be cleaned and inspected before every load, especially when moving between different types of grain. General guidance also recommends cleaning trucks and handling equipment before each use to reduce the risk of cross-contamination.

2. Know the moisture of the grain

Moisture is the most important factor in grain safety. Grain with high moisture is exposed to mould and spoilage, and this affects both the trip and the storage after delivery. Using a moisture meter before loading gives both sides a clear picture of the condition of the goods on receipt.

3. Cover the load well

Using suitable tarpaulins and fastening them properly protects the load from rain, moisture and dust, and reduces losses during the trip. Post-harvest loss training materials treat preparing the truck bed and using tarpaulins as two basic steps for reducing losses in transit.

4. Do not overload

An overloaded truck is less stable and harder to control, which FAO also warns about. A balanced load within the permitted limits protects the driver and the goods together.

5. Reduce waiting time

The longer grain stays exposed to the air, especially in heat and humidity, the higher the chance of spoilage. Coordinating loading and unloading times in advance reduces waiting and preserves quality.

6. Document the condition of the shipment

Recording the quantity and the condition of the goods at loading and at delivery avoids disputes and helps trace any problem to its real cause.
